Christmas Tree at Tredegar House

With the popularity in recent years of TV shows such as Downtown Abbey, the interest in period properties and the lifestyles of their inhabitants has grown. Tredegar House is popular with visitors from the local area and those travelling from further afield. The red brick mansion you see today was built in the 17th-century and was home the Morgan family until 1951. They played an important part in Newport’s heritage influencing social, political, and economic decisions. The fascinating stories and interesting characters from this wealthy family are waiting to be discovered on your visit.

Tredegar House at Christmas

Arriving at Tredegar House from the end of November and throughout December offers you a chance to discover a traditional Christmas and experience what life was like when living in a stately home at this special time of year. Modern life can be busy especially at Christmas so step into a bygone era and lose yourself in the memories and sights of the past. There are state rooms, below stairs kitchens and servant’s areas to explore. At certain times the 1930s style bedrooms can be viewed as well.

The beauty of the historic house when dressed for Christmas cannot be underestimated. Full of twinkling lights with grandly decorated Christmas trees in nearly every room, the house is full of splendour and is a joy to explore during the festive season. In addition, the formal gardens and outdoor trees are all adorned with a variety of Christmas decorations including baubles and lanterns.

What’s On for Christmas 2021 at Tredegar House

A calendar full of festive fun is planned for Christmas 2021 at Tredegar House. Whether visiting on your own, as a family or couple you’ll find a Christmas activity to enjoy. Throughout December choose from different Christmas trails around the gardens and parkland including Wander with Percy the Park Keeper, Reindeer walk and Twelve Days of Christmas trail.  Self led Christmas craft activities can also be found in the Orangery on weekends in December.

On Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th December Cotyledon’s Food and Craft market will open between 11am and 4pm. A great opportunity to purchase some unique Christmas gifts. You can enjoy festive musical performances while you explore the house and formal gardens during the Magical Music weekend on Saturday 18th-Sunday 19th December. A lovely way to get into the festive spirit. Finally, see Victorian Scrooge with his comical behaviour in a night gown and frowning, return to the house. Dare to wish him Merry Christmas and he’ll be sure wish you Bah Humbug!

Interestingly Newport’s first zero waste shop has opened at Tredegar House, finding its home in the grounds of the house, located in the lesser barn. The National Trust is a conservation charity, so while visiting and enjoying the seasonal festivities you can take steps to help the environment this Christmas. Customers can refill soap, shampoo and shower gel bottles and learn more about how to reduce the amount of waste created by their shopping. There is also a second-hand bookshop giving old books a new home.

Don’t miss a visit to the Brewhouse café for a choice of light meals, cakes, and sweet treats. Hot and cold beverages are also available ensuring you can get suitable refreshment during your visit to Tredegar House.
